Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument.

Sunset Crater Volcano was born through a series of eruptions between 1040 and 1100. The lava which flowed from these eruptions oxidized red and yellow, which painted the crater with a permanent "sunset" so bright that it appeared to glow from intense inner heat. Visit the rugged volcanic landscape of the Sunset Crater Volcano and discover slopes filled with ponderosa pines, wildflowers, local wildlife and dramatic geologic formations.
