Originally established in 1915 by Woodrow Wilson, the Walnut Canyon National Monument today is operated by the National Park Service. Explore the canyon's beautiful 3,600 acres teeming with gorgeous mountains, rock formations and pine forests. Outdoor adventure seekers will discover miles of pristine trails. Hike the Rim Trail and discover two outlooks offering spectacular views of the canyon. The Rim Trail is perfect for all skill levels and takes roughly 30 minutes to complete the .7 mile trek. Feeling a little more adventurous? Challenge your stamina on the Island Trail, which descends 180 vertical feet into the canyon. You'll pass by 25 Sinagua cliff dwellings along this one mile roundtrip journey and surround yourself by the unique flora and fauna that call the canyon home.

Walnut Canyon National Monument Cliff Dwellings.

The Walnut Canyon National Monument was once the home of the Sinagua people, a pre-Columbian culture of Northern Arizona farmers. Nestled in the alcoves of the canyon's limestone ledge are the remnants of their simplistic cliffside dwellings. Visitors will also discover views of the Sinagua pueblos and pithouses along the canyon rim.
